We asked Parul Sharma, Chief Commercial Officer at Viedoc Technologies, to share her thoughts on International Women's Day's importance in the clinical trials industry.

Traditionally, research has been done in male-dominated studies by men for men, resulting in male-biased medicines. The lack of involvement was initially due to reasons other than scientific. But as times changed and women become more involved in every aspect of society, clinical trials remained slow to change. Since the mid-sixties and the thalidomide tragedy, there was a very cautious approach to women's involvement because of the risks during pregnancies. It wasn't until the 90's that the FDA lifted the ban on pregnant women participating in clinical studies.

Much progress has been made over the years in women's rights in many parts of the world. However, March 8th is an important reminder that much work is yet to be done.  Parul Sharma.

The work to be done is not only on the socio, economic and political levels but also within clinical research. Today, the importance of the inclusion of women in clinical research is much better understood.

Parul continues:
However, women are still underrepresented in clinical trials. And the need to continue to push for more inclusion and more women-centric studies remains.

COVID-19 has reminded us once again of the differences between men and women. While men appear to be hit harder by the disease, women have taken the brunt of the pandemic. They have been forced out of the labor market in much higher numbers to care for family members. Much research also needs to be done to ensure everyone gains access to vaccines, including pregnant women, but more research needs to be done. And Viedoc is there to support that research.

Viedoc supports all women of the scientific community, helping push forward the advancement of medicines and making the world a healthier place for everyone.

Enjoy your day!
